Importance of Agriculture
Building a Greener Future: Supporting Agricultural Development
Agriculture is the cornerstone of Pakistan’s economy, and has played a vital role in the nation’s socioeconomic development. Contributing approximately 24% to the GDP and employing nearly 40% of the workforce, agriculture is not only a key driver of economic growth, but is also the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the rural population. The sector supports the production of major crops like wheat, rice, cotton and sugarcane, which are crucial for both domestic consumption and export earnings. Agriculture also underpins the food security of the country, providing sustenance to millions of people. Additionally, it supports related industries such as textiles, agro-based manufacturing and food processing. However, the sector faces challenges such as water scarcity, outdated farming practices, and the impacts of climate change, highlighting the need for modernization and sustainable practices. Strengthening agriculture through innovation, investment and infrastructural development is essential for enhancing productivity, boosting the economy, and ensuring the well-being of Pakistan’s growing population.
Realizing its importance and criticality for the country, Dua Foundation has been playing a pivotal role in promoting agriculture in Pakistan, particularly in the arid and underserved regions like Tharparkar. Through its innovative Agro Farm projects, Dua Foundation has introduced sustainable farming practices that are transforming barren lands into productive farms. By providing access to water through solar-powered tube wells and implementing modern irrigation techniques, the Foundation has enabled the cultivation of crops, such as wheat, mustard, cotton, and various fruits, including dates, olives, pomegranates and jujube. These efforts not only improve food security, but also create new income opportunities for local farmers, thus enhancing their livelihoods.
Dua Foundation’s approach includes offering training and resources to farmers, equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to maximize crop yields and manage farms in a sustainable manner. The introduction of high-value crops and fruit trees, such as those sourced from nurseries across the country, helps diversify agriculture and boost the economic resilience of the farming communities.
Furthermore, Dua Foundation’s focus on grafting wild shrubs and promoting the cultivation of drought-resistant plants like Moringa and Australian Acacia demonstrate the Foundation’s commitment towards environment conservation and resource efficiency. By setting up over 60 Agro Farms and several fish farms, Dua Foundation has created a replicable model for sustainable agriculture that inspires local farmers to adopt similar practices, thereby fostering an environment to initiate agricultural revolution in remote areas. Through these initiatives, Dua Foundation significantly contributes towards the agricultural development of Pakistan, helping to secure a more sustainable and prosperous future for rural communities.
